My first Unbound was meant to be a bucket list one-off—but I’m hooked. Despite the course’s muddy reputation, sunny weather dried things out just in time.
This year, the course looped north of Emporia which, as I hear, is less prone to mud but has rougher roads.
The race started fast and chaotic with plenty of crashes, but I stayed clear and moved up early. After about 90 minutes, the legs faded. I shifted from racing to damage control: upped hydration and nutrition, rode conservatively, and avoided blowing up. It worked.
I rallied late, found a good group, and finished strong. If 100th on an off day is the baseline, I’ve got more to give.
